Here is a sneak-peak into the work lives of some of this year’s PEY interns

Kota Abe (CIV 2T0 + PEY), Arup

What is your position? Provide a brief description of what you do (it’d be great if you can include some project work you’ve done in the past if it’s not confidential)

I’m a geotechnical engineering intern at Arup currently working on the Finch West LRT project. I’ve gotten exposure to a wide range of geotechnical engineering topics on this project. For example, I’ve helped to design and analyse retaining walls and deep excavations, build finite element models, run slope stability analyses, and review ground investigation data. I also work on writing and compiling reports and creating drawings.

If you have to describe your work environment in 3 words, what would they be?

Collaborative, friendly, busy

What are some things you wish you knew before starting the job?

How to use AutoCAD and MicroStation. I also feel that having some field experience would help me visualize the project more clearly

Perks of working at your company…

The office interior is very nice and it’s in the middle of downtown. Also we get a lot of free food and there’s free kombucha on tap in the kitchen
