Here is a sneak-peak into the work lives of some of this year’s PEY interns

Wenze Guan (CIV 2T0 + PEY), Arup

What is your position? Provide a brief description of what you do (it’d be great if you can include some project work you’ve done in the past if it’s not confidential)

I am a Civil Engineer Intern, specifically Wet Utilities Designer (watermain, stormwater, sewage). I’ve been working on the Finch LRT project. I use AutoCAD a lot for wet utility design and relocation and sometimes I also work on hydraulic modelling and calculations.

If you have to describe your work environment in 3 words, what would they be?

 Open-minded, supportive, possibility

What are some things you wish you knew before starting the job?

You learn a lot by working. Knowing the project scope beyond what you’re working on is very important.

Perks of working at your company…

Arup has an amazing kitchen! Our office hosts a lot of staff socials and they’re always super fun. At Arup, you will be a part of an international multidisciplinary design and consulting firm. Personally, the highlight of working at this company is that you work at whichever office you want to, as long as you coordinate with your boss. Many full-time employees I know have worked at different Arup offices around the world. Arup radiates energy that makes me feel like I have endless possibility as long as I’m willing to learn new things and work hard.
